An election for a constituent assembly was held in Tunisia on 23 October 2011, following the Tunisian revolution and announced on 3 March 2011.〔(Tunisia to elect constituent assembly on 24 July, says president ) FOCUS Information Agency, 3 March 2011〕 The new Assembly has 217 members. It was the first free election held in Tunisia since the country's independence in 1956, as well as the first election in the Arab world held after the start of the Arab Spring. The newly elected Constituent Assembly also has the power to either appoint a new government or extend the current one's term until the general election originally scheduled for July, which will now be held later. The result was announced after counting began on 25 October 2011.
